Over 40? How to Improve Your Jiu-Jitsu and Life — Try Degeiko

How’s your Jiu-Jitsu training going?

Sometimes, stepping outside your home gym and training somewhere new can completely refresh your journey. I just turned 50 last month, and during my time in Istanbul, I went to train at Inferno BJJ.

Most people there were younger, bigger, and way more athletic than me. I got tapped many times… but still walked off the mats smiling.

Why?

Because of the 出稽古(Degeiko spirit)

What’s that? Don’t worry, I’ll explain. And if you’re in your 40s or 50s like me, stepping into a new academy can feel a little scary.

My hope is that this video gives you the courage to try visiting another gym — not just to roll, but to experience respect, learning, and connection in a new way.

In this video you’ll see: What Degeiko is, beyond just a “drop-in” Why respect and humility make training better for everyone How training abroad reminded me of the deeper side of Jiu-Jitsu Tips if you ever plan to do Degeiko in Japan.

If you’re over 40 and love BJJ, I hope this gives you courage to try Degeiko too. And if you enjoyed the video, please like, comment, and subscribe — more stories and training insights are coming soon!
