Why White Belts Over 40 Can’t Escape Side Control In BJJ

For White Belts over 40, being stuck in side control is more than just a technical struggle—it’s a moment of pure desperation.

I’ve been there many times myself.
Pinned under a younger, faster opponent, staring at the ceiling and wondering if I should just tap to end the pressure.

Through my journey, I realized that my own instinct to struggle was often what kept me trapped. In this video, I reflect on the “Escape Trap” and how changing my perspective from the bottom changed everything.

In this video:

The “Escape Trap”: My experience with how struggling can sometimes give away the very space we need.

Finding Stillness: How I learned to turn a high-pressure moment into a “quiet classroom.”

Mapping the Pressure: A look at staying calm and collecting data while pinned.

A Practitioner’s Path: Why strategy and mindset matter more than strength as we age.

About Me:
I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 43 and earned my brown belt at 50. At “The Rolling Dead,” I share the philosophy and the daily physical challenges of those of us who started this journey later in life. My hope is simply to be one step better than yesterday, alongside all of you.
