At 50, I Got Destroyed on the BJJ Mat. Still Laughing. Why?

BJJ over 40 | Degeiko in Chiang Mai — 2 months out from the Asia Championship.

Degeiko (出稽古) is a Japanese martial arts culture of visiting unfamiliar gyms and training with people outside your usual environment.

I flew to Chiang Mai for Degeiko, two months out from the Asia BJJ Championship.

I got completely destroyed. Every escape failed. Every frame I built snapped like a toothpick. By the end of the session, I had set what might be a personal record for most taps in a single day.

And somehow, on the walk back to the café — I couldn’t stop laughing.

This video isn’t about how to train smarter after 40, or how to protect your ego, or how to handle defeat with discipline. It’s about a specific day when nothing worked. And what I noticed — in myself — when I stepped outside that gym.

I started Jiu-Jitsu at 43. Earned my brown belt at 50.

If you’re over 40 and training BJJ, you know this feeling. The day when nothing clicks. Your shrimp escape does nothing. Your bridge does nothing. You leave wondering why you even showed up.

That day doesn’t feel like progress.

But maybe it is.
