When Does Your BJJ Finally Start Working? (What You Were Missing)

“I could do nothing.”

We’ve all felt that despair on the mat. Especially when your years of training are erased by a young beginner in seconds. But is your Jiu-Jitsu really back to zero?

In this video, I share a painful realization from my second year as a white belt, and how a recent spar as a brown belt changed my perspective on “progress” forever.

■WHO IS ME?

  • Founder of The Rolling Dead
  • Started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 43
  • Received Brown Belt at 50
  • Just a regular guy sharing the reality of Jiu-Jitsu for the over-40 generation.

■THE PHILOSOPHY

Jiu-Jitsu over 40 is not about how many people you submit. It’s about how you face your own ego when “nothing works.”

Your technique is working in the invisible area. Every shrimp, every frame, every breath―it’s never zero. If you survived the full 5-minute spar without giving up, that is a victory.

What was your “small challenge” that worked today?
It doesn’t have to be a perfect sweep. It could be:

  • Making a tiny bit of space with a shrimp.
  • Keeping your elbows tight to defend the underhook.
  • Or simply staying on the mat for the full round.
  • Please share your “one tiny step” in the comments below.

Let’s keep rolling together.
